Abdullah ibn Ubai:The Incident at the Muraisi Well.

Nov-Dec 627 CE, an army sent for an operation against Banu al-Mustaliq. Till this time, the tribe bonded with Muslims as brotherhood. But recently their leader Haris bin Abu Didar cut off the relation and looted the down town of Medina.
This was the cause of this operation.

A group of Hypocrites under the leadership of Abdullah ibn Ubai also take part in this operation. They came only to be a part of the wealth and ammunition from the war. Though they were hypocrites, yet they believe that Muhammad will surely wins with the help of God.

When the Muslim army reaches near the Muraisi Well, they faced with the army leaded by Haris bin Abu Didar. However, the battle ended in with the full victory of Muslims.

The Army remained at the Muraisi Well for several days. This time an altercation took place between the Muhajir and Ansar on taking water from the Well.

Hypocrite leader Abullah ibn Ubai sends one of his servants Senana to take some water from the well. And when he came to the well, he found Jahja-one of the servants of Omar filling two pots with water sitting on the edge of the well.
Senana said to him, ‘let me take water.’
Jahja said, ‘You have to wait till the pot of Rasulallah and Hazrat Abu Bakar filled.’

But Senana was not agreed to wait. So a quarrel begins with them and in a phase, Jahja punched a blow on the face of Senana. And when the limit exceeds, Ansar Senana calls for help from the Ansars and Muhajr Jahja seeks from Muhajirs. When Muhammad came to know this, he immediately came to the spot and said to all-‘Stop calling as the era of ignorance. Why you were organizing on the basis of country and ancestral nationality? Do you wish to go back to the era of Barbarians?
--Every Muslim should help other Muslims-whether he is Tyrant or Oppressed. To help oppressed means to protect him from violence. And to help Tyrant means to resist him from violence.’

Hearing this Advice, at once the quarrel settled. Muhammad appointed Obaida ibn Samed on investigate and take necessary steps. Then on the investigation, it was proved that Jahja makes excessive. He injured Senana with his hit. So, by the direction of the middle man Obaida, Jahja asked for forgiveness and Senana accept it.

Meanwhile, when Senana came back with water, Abdullah ibn Ubai asked him the cause of his delay. Senana said, 'One of the servants of Hazrat Omar seated on the edge of the Well. He did not permit any to take water from the well before filling the pot of Rasulallah and Hazrat Abu Bakar.’

Hearing all, ibn Ubai finds a great opportunity to clash between Muslims. To exite Ansar against Mohajir, he said to his people, those were present at that time in his meeting- “You makes Mujahir ride on your head by calling them in your country and distributing your wealth and property among them. They have outnumbered and shared us our land. You know, if you fatten your dog, it will eat you. If your knowledge does not come back yet they ultimately will make your life Hell. So, on returning Medina, the most honourable (Ansar) will expel the meanest (Muhajir) out of Medina.”

A devotee Muslim Jayed ibn Arkam was present at that meeting of Ubai. When he reported this to Muhammad, a change appeared to his face. He said, ‘Think again about what you saying that is true or not.”
Jayed said, “I heard it with my own ears in my own presence.”
The sayings of ibn Ubai disclosed to all Muslims. And all the Ansars began to rebuke Jayed. So he said, “If my father told such a word then surely I would told it to Rasulallah.”

On the other hand, when Omar came to know this he said to Rasulallah, “Order me; at once I will bring his cutting head to you.”

Muhammad naturally turned down Omars proposal on the grounds that it did not become of a Prophet to be accused of killing his people. And he said to Omar, "Don’t you see ‘Omar if I had him killed, a large number of dignitaries would have furiously hastened to fight for him. Now, on the contrary, if I ask them to kill him, they will do so out of their own free will."
Omar replied, "I swear by Allah that the Prophet’s judgement is much more sound than mine."

When Abdullah, son of Abdullah ibn Ubai hear the sayings of Omar, he at once came to Muhammad and said, “Messenger of God, I have been told that you want to kill Abdullah ibn Ubai because of what has been reported to you concerning him. If you are going to do it, command me to do it and I will bring you his head. By God, al-Khazraj knows that there has never been among them a man more dutiful to his father than I. I am afraid that you may order someone else to do it and he may kill him; and then my soul will not allow me to look on the slayer of my father walking among the people: I would kill him, killing a believer to avenge an unbeliever, and thereby enter the Fire of hell.”
Muhammad Said, “I have no intention to do so nor I ordered someone to do such.”

Muhammad declared to back the army to Medina in an unusual time. And at that time he called ibn Ubai and asked him, ‘Do you really saying so?’
He said, ‘Never ever I say so. This boy Jayed is nothing but a Liar.’

Abdullah ibn Ubai has power and influence in his own tribe. Therefore, Muhammad thought, may be it was a misunderstanding of Jayed. And its reflection goes to all. So, everyone was rebuking Jayed now. For this, he was moving hiding him for a fear of more insulting.

Walking a day and a night all were tired. So the army set tent in a place. This time Obaida ibn Samed told ibn Ubai, ‘Go to Hazrat and admit your crime. He will forgive you.’
Ubai was not willing to plead guilty. So he turns his face aside.

Then the following verses of Qur’an sent down- When the hypocrites come to you, they say, "We testify that you are the Messenger of Allah." And Allah knows that you are His Messenger, and Allah testifies that the hypocrites are liars. They have taken their oaths as a cover, so they averted (people) from the way of Allah. Indeed, it was evil that they were doing. That is because they believed, and then they disbelieved; so their hearts were sealed over, and they do not understand. And when you see them, their forms please you, and if they speak, you listen to their speech. (They are) as if they were pieces of wood propped up - they think that every shout is against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them. May Allah destroy them; how are they deluded?

And when it is said to them, "Come, the Messenger of Allah will ask forgiveness for you," they turn their heads aside and you see them evading while they are arrogant. It is all the same for them whether you ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them; never will Allah forgive them. Indeed, Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people. They are the ones who say, "Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disband." And to Allah belongs the depositories of the heavens and the earth, but the hypocrites do not understand. They say, "If we return to al-Madinah, the more honored (for power) will surely expel there from the more humble." And to Allah belongs (all) honor, and to His Messenger, and to the believers, but the hypocrites do not know. (63:1-8)

When these verses of Qur’an sent down, some well wisher of ibn Ubai told him, ‘Do you know the verses of Qur’an sent down about you? Still you have time, go to Muhammad and plead your guilty. He may seek pardon to Allah for you.’
But Ubai told him in an exciting Voice, ‘You told me to take on faith-I do. Then you told me to give Jakah-I am doing that too. Then what is in a due? Do I Prostrate Muhammad?’

Akik Valley, at the edge of Medina, Abdullah son of Abdullah ibn Ubai drew sword against his father and barred his entry into the town. He said to his father, ‘By God, you can’t enter Medina till you explain the word- the honourable will expel the meanest.’

People those were going near them all were rebuking Jayed. And then Muhammad came to that place. Jayed said, “O My father, you have to confess and declare that you yourself is the meanest of the citizens of Medina and that Muhammad is the most honourable of us.”
ibn Ubai said, “I am the most harassed and insulted person than that of the child and women.”
Muhammad asked, ‘What is the matter?’

A man told him, ‘Abdullah barred his father with sayings that he can not enter Medina without the permission of Rasulallah.’
So Muhammad told Abdullah, ‘Let him go.’ And Abdullah remove his bar.

End.
